The monthly JR subscription is aimed at middle-school kids age 8-12 and may include bookmarks, lip balms, art supplies, puzzles, crafts, trinkets or treats.

VIBookCrates mission is to create reading adventures for children aged 8-12. Reading is so important and we believe that anything that promotes it - is a good thing! So we have designed a themed box that will ship to you each month that is filled with amazing items that will take your kids on a reading adventure!

There's also a box for adults that will give you the excuse to take the time you need for yourself. The adult box ships seasonally and may include bookmarks, stationary, candles, soaps, socks, jewelry, magnets or lip balms.

There are two JR crates to choose from:Action and Adventure or Tales and Fables. There may be times when both JR crates feature the same book, but the other items included will vary from each style of box.

Monthly JR crates ship on the 15th of each month. The Seasonal Crate ships in February (Spring), May (summer), August (fall), and November (winter).

This is a review for the JR Crate.

The theme for May is "Destiny". The theme is the same for both JR crates this month.

The box also includes a packet for the parent or caregiver.

The card suggests parents ask kids questions about the book to help increase reading comprehension. There's a list of questions and some fun info about gold in Canada. Kristen, VIB's founder, also created a Youtube video for parents that explains the book and all the products in the box. It's sent by e-mail after shipping.

Second look!

Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff ($19.99)
In a magic kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone’s joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and she’s right. With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse.

To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—he just might triumph in the end.

This book gets great reviews on Amazon. It sounds like a fun read for kids!

Fool's Gold Excavation  Kit ($8.99)
Mine your own gold just like the people in Rump's mountain  village.
This is a fun activity to go along with the book. We're saving it for a rainy day, although I hope we don't have one anytime soon.

Spring Wriggly Worms Gummy Worms
Enjoy your own yummier version of "sludge" with these treats.

This little pack included four tasty gummy worms! A sweet treat is a nice addition.

Island Life Soap Mini Bath Bomb ($2.50)
To was off yoru stay with the trolls and repel the pesky pixies.
This bath bomb smells AMAZING. The scent is called "Monkey Farts" and it's coconut banana. The gold dusting makes for a fun and colourful bath. Not going to lie though... I'm keeping this for myself. Island Life Soap is based in the Cowichan Valley of BC and was custom made for this box.

Rump Bookmark
A bonus bookmark is always handy. Every VIBookcrate will include a custom bookmark.

Final look!

The May VIBookCrate JR included a hardcover novel plus four extras. The retail value is around $32 Canadian. I planned to share this box with my 9 year old niece, but she's in French Immersion so her English reading skills aren't quite strong enough for this book. Instead I passed the book to a friend's 11 year old and she absolutely devoured it. Frequent readers know that I LOVE book boxes, especially when they are themed and include lovely gifts. It's even better that this box is Canadian and supports local businesses. I think any child that enjoys reading would love to receive  this box every month.

Interested in trying VIBookcrate? This box is still available! Click here to order as a one-time purchase. Those interested in subscribing can use promo code cdnbox10 to save 10% off your first box!  The theme for the upcoming June box is "Mysterious Magic".
