Each monthly box includes a bestselling fiction novel, an item connected to the novel's storyline or theme, a delicious drink to set the mood, a sweet treat to enjoy while reading, and a card explaining the novel choice and how all the items connect. Kerrie and Mark read and carefully select paperback novels from the Globe and Mail Best Seller list and the New York Times Bestseller List. Boxes ship on the 15th of each month via Canada Post.

Great packaging!

This month Sweet Reads Box wanted a novel centred around the theme of Remembrance, so they chose a novel set during WWII.

First look!

The novel this month is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah ($23.99 CDN Retail). Kerrie and Mark chose this one because French woman fighting in the resistance during World War II stood out to them. The hardcover version of this book was released in February 2015, but the paperback just came out earlier this year.

From the publisher:

The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France-a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

I love historical fiction, especially stories told during WWII. I actually recently finished another book from the same period, also about women of the French resistance (check it out here). I can't wait to dig into this one!

Now for the goodies... The note says it was a big harder to select items this month because the two protagonists are without for almost the entire novel. The items chosen coordinate with the themes, events, and characters in the book.

The Perth Soap Co. Sparkling Champagne Cleansing Bar  ($10)
When the war ended, champagne flowed freely as the Allies celebrated their victory. This company is based in Perth, Ontario. The bar smells fresh and lovely.

Simpkins Travel Sweets Tin in Forest Fruits with Guarana (~$4)
Tinned sweets were easy to send to soldiers during wartime and Simpkins has been a British favourite since 1921.

Danica Studio Bicicletta Pouch ($21.48)
The old fashioned bicycle on this pouch reminded the curators of the bicycle one of the characters uses to deliver messages and papers. They suggest using this pouch to keep your own secret notes and papers.

What better way to say thank you than with Brazilian toasted mate, blended with spices and citrus peels to add a little zest to your gratitude.
What better way to thank the allied soldiers for their service than with a thank you. Merci tea is flavoured with cinnamon and orange so it's perfect for chilly November days.

Sweet Reads Pen and Sticky Notes
A bonus gift from Sweet Reads Box.

The November Sweet Reads Box included a paperback novel plus four items. The retail value is over $62 Canadian. The curation of this box is wonderful. Kerrie and Mark had a tough challenge finding items to fit a novel set during WWII, but they did a great job. The items selected for the box are perfect and the way they tied them into the story is so thoughtful. I can't wait to start reading and meet Vianne and Isabelle, the two women who inspired it all!
