What’s in it? A recently released novel as well as 3 related items and a note from the curator.

Novel Editions is a Canadian subscription box for book lovers. Each month, Novel Editions sends a carefully curated box of bookish items. Expect to receive a fiction novel released in the last 6 months, 3-4 items that are relevant to the book, plus a note from the curator explaining why she chose the book. The founder, Alex, spends a great deal of time each month curating the perfect box to bring joy to subscribers. Month after month, Novel Edition remains one of my favourite subscription boxes!

The theme for June is "Evolution".

Alex writes that this month's book "offers some interesting ideas and questions what it means to be human". The items included this month were created by small businesses, two of which are Canadian!

June is the last month of my 3-month subscription, so I received a handwritten note from Alex thanking me for my order and reminding me to re-subscribe. This was a very nice touch.

Once unpacked, this is what I found inside the box!

Buck Naked Soap Company Gold Rush Bath Bomb ($5.49)
These vegan bath bombs are hand crafted in small batches using natural colours and fragrances. Well carries a huge selection of Buck Naked Soap Co. products, and they are proudly Canadian.

Mane Massage Agate Hair Ties ($10.50)
This set of hair ties features scans from an actual slice of agate. These hair ties are made from stretchy elastic and they double as boho bracelets. I actually use mine for packing. They keep rolled items rolled tight so everything fits perfectly into my suitcase. It's a little travel hack that I learned from a subscription box!

BirchBliss by Katelyn Morse Camping Art Print (5x7, ~$12)
This print was designed by Nova Scotia artist Katelyn Morse. She describes this camping night sky print as being for the "soul who craves adventure and exploration of the outdoors".

Inside the wrapped book, we find the product card. Alex wraps this into the book to help avoid spoilers.

And the book this month...

The Last Neanderthal by Claire Cameron ($29.95 retail)
This hard cover book was released in April 2017. The publisher describes it as "the enthralling story of two women separated by millennia, but linked by an epic journey that will transform them both".

40,000 years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate.

But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. As Girl and Runt face the coming winter storms, Girl realizes she has one final chance to save her people, even if it means sacrificing part of herself.

In the modern day, archaeologist Rosamund Gale works well into her pregnancy, racing to excavate newly found Neanderthal artifacts before her baby comes. Linked across the ages by the shared experience of early motherhood, both stories examine the often taboo corners of women's lives.
Haunting, suspenseful, and profoundly moving, The Last Neanderthal asks us to reconsider all we think we know about what it means to be human.

This is a very interesting premise. Alex is right, it's not something I would have picked myself, but I can't wait to read it! The reviews on Chapters are very good. Many people describe it as "scientifically sound" and  note that a lot of research went into the writing. This is a good sign!

The Last Neanderthal Autographed Book Plate - Bonus
This sticker affixes to the inside of your book. It's signed by the author, Claire Cameron.

The June box from Novel Editions included a newly released hardcover novel plus four extras. The retail value this month is over $58 Canadian. I haven't read the book yet but I can already see how the extras fit with the theme. Alex always manages to find the most creative, thoughtful items to fill the boxes, and I love that she often sources items from Canadian makers. This box is still available for purchase! The book club chat, featuring a guest appearance by Claire Cameron, takes place on Facebook on July 5th. You still have time to order the book and read it before then! The July box is now available for purchase as well. The theme is Whimsy and the box will include a literary novel and three related items. Click here to subscribe!
