Novel Editions Review - December 2016 - Canadian Book Subscription Box + PROMO CODE

Canadian Box Addict pays for this box.

What is it? Novel Editions
How Much? $44.99/month, plus tax and $9.61 shipping. Save on 3 month terms. Prices in Canadian dollars.
What’s in it? A recently released novel as well as 3 related items and a note from the curator.

Novel Editions is a Canadian subscription box for book lovers. Each month, Novel Editions sends a carefully curated box of bookish items. Expect to receive a fiction novel released in the last 6 months, 3-4 items that are relevant to the book, plus a note from the curator explaining why she chose the book. The founder, Alex, spends a great deal of time each month curating the perfect box to bring joy to subscribers.

I spend hours each month reading different novels until I find  one that touches my heart and leaves me thinking about it for days afterwards. I am constantly researching and thoughtfully curating each box until I'm 100% satisfied with what's in it from the individual items to the ribbon each piece is tied in.

Boxes ship the first week of each month via Canada Post. Shipping is a flat rate $9.61 across Canada. A single month subscription is non-recurring, so you need to sign up again the following month. The 3 month terms are pre-paid and non-recurring and shipping is included in the total cost.

Mid-month, Alex releases a Book Club Guide on the Novel Editions Blog. There is also a Novel Editions Book Club Facebook Group where subscribers can share their thoughts and join in an online monthly book chat. With these features, Novel Editions really is a complete "book club in a box". I took part in the November Book Chat a couple of weeks ago. The author of November's featured book, Bryn Greenwood, even made an appearance in the Facebook chat to answer some of our questions. It was a great experience and it really solidified my love for this subscription!

The theme for December is Literary Rebels.

The card explains that the theme is and items in the box are inspired by Emily Dickinson, The Scarlet Letter, and other such "literary rebels". Alex says this month's book is a wonderful cold weather read... perfect for this odd blast of winter we are experiencing in Vancouver.

First look - the box unpacked!

The Ballroom by Anna Hope ($24.95 CDN Retail)
Alex says the characters in the book are also what she considers rebels. Here is the blurb from Indigo:
Yorkshire, England, 1911: After a moment of defiance at the factory where she has worked since she was a child, Ella Fay finds herself an unwilling patient at the Sharston Asylum. Ella knows she is not mad, but she might have to learn to play the game before she can make a true bid for freedom. John Mulligan is a chronic patient, frozen with grief since the death of his child, but when Ella runs towards him one morning in an attempt to escape the place where he has found refuge, everything changes. It is in the ornate ballroom at the centre of the asylum, where the male and female patients are allowed to gather every Friday evening to dance, that Ella and John begin a tentative, secret correspondence that will have shattering consequences, as love and the possibility of redemption are set against one ambitious doctor's eagerness to make his mark in the burgeoning field of eugenics, at all costs.
Set over the heatwave summer of 1911, at a time when England was at the point of revolt, The Ballroom is a tale of unlikely love and dangerous obsession, of madness and sanity, and of who gets to decide which is which.

I've only just started this book (not as quick with it as last month!), but so far, my interest is piqued. I'm a huge fan of period novels, and the story here is so original.

The product card lists the other items we received this month.

Hearth & Hammer Mini Library Literary Candle Sampler ($14 US)
This mini library includes the complete collection of Heath & Hammer candles. Scents include Signal Fire, Burning Books, Open Road, Moonlit Moors, The Green Light, Walden Woods, Pemberley Park, Scarlet Letter, Aged Page, and Café Au Library. The package label doubles as a bookmark.

Finding Box Brass Feather Bookmark ($1)
This is such a lovely and unique bookmark!

Shishko Template Emily Dickinson Inspired Notecards (3 cards)
These lovely art cards feature a feather-themed Emily Dickinson quote.

The December Novel Editions box included a recently-released book and three additional, related items. We also received a Novel Editions bookmark! The value is pretty close to the cost paid, but I find this box is more about the book club experience. As with last month, the box is well curated to fit the book and theme. I'm looking forward to the book club chat coming in January!

Interested in trying Novel Editions? Use promo code cdnboxaddict to save 10% off the December box (I paid $52.93 CDN, including tax and shipping, minus the discount). Code is not valid on 3 month terms. Also remember that the monthly subscription does not renew, so you will have to order again to get the next box. The January box is on sale now and the theme is Enchantment!
