What is it? Creation Crate
How Much? Starts at $29.99/month. Shipping included. Prices in US dollars.
What’s in it? A monthly tech project with all the hardware and programming software needed.

Creation Crate is a Canadian subscription box that helps kids aged 12+ learn how to build electronics without any prior experience. Creation Crate is tech education-in-a-box! The projects are a combination of building hardware and programming software. Each month's project will be slightly harder than the last. Click here to see some of the projects. The only equipment you need is a computer with USB port.
Every box is going to be different depending on the project, but the 3 main components are: the UNO R3 (Arduino-compatible), which is like a pocket-sized computer, various components, and the instruction booklet. The core sections of the instruction booklet are: Hardware, Programming, Common Errors, and Exercises. Each section contains detailed explanations of the steps.

While Creation Crate is recommended for ages 12+, younger children may be able to do these projects with some parental guidance. With more and more reports suggesting learning coding is just as important as learning the core curriculum (see one here), Creation Crate is a great way to get your child interested in coding and technology. But... Creation Crate is not just for kids. Anyone with an interest in building electronics may find interest with this box.

I gave this box to my boyfriend so he could play around. He has a background in mechanical engineering so this was right up his alley.

For Month 1, we are building a Mood Lamp.
This lamp changes colours and only turns on when the lights are off! In this month, you will learn how to write your very own computer program in the Arduino language and how to connect electronic components together using a breadboard and some wires. You will learn about basic programming concepts - such as comments and variables - as well as how the Uno R3 microcontroller uses this code to set the brightness of the LED lights. Once you’ve mastered this, the sky’s the limit!
Here are all the components included in the box.

There is also a detailed instruction booklet. There is also a password to access a project support area on the Creation Crate website.

First, the hardware. Connect the components to the breadboard, then attach the wires and the UNO R3.

Next, the programming. To do this part, you need to download a proprietary software program (free download).

Plug the hardware into your computer using the USB cord and copy the code from the instruction booklet.

Once the code is entered, we test to see if it works. If it doesn't work, there is a page listing some common errors and how to troubleshoot.

With the light functioning, we move on to coding exercises. We can change the brightness of the mood lamp simply by changing a bit of code. We can also make the light change colours faster, and we can adjust the amount of darkness required for the lamp to function.

The "Mood Lamp" project from Creation Crate included all the supplies needed to create a computer powered light. This project helps improve dexterity through the assembly of the hardware, and it introduces users to "structured programming". In total, it took my boyfriend two hours to complete this project from start to finish, and he enjoyed every minute of it. While this box is aimed at kids aged 12+, it is really a great idea for anyone with an interest in tech projects. G had a huge smile on his face through the entire project, and even expressed interest in subscribing (the first time he's every considered getting his own subscription box)! Afterwards, he disassembled the entire thing and we've passed it onto his 10 year old godson.
