This is a review for Frock Box Favourites.

For years I have been reading American blogger reviews of Stitch Fix, a subscription clothing service just like Frock Box Favourites. I was very excited to see a service like this finally operating in Canada. With Frock Box Favourites, your stylist picks 5 items based on your profile and preferences. The style quiz is very in depth. Along with selecting pictures that most closely match your personal style and indicating how you like to spend your free time, you have the option to check off what items you would like to receive and leave out items you don't want. My profile was pretty tight. I said no skirts, shorts, pants, hats, jewellery, swimwear, sunglasses, or purses. I said yes to tank tops, shirts, dresses, jackets, and sweaters. I requested things that were office appropriate and described my style as "put together casual".

The items arrive in a large re-sealable mailing bag. A postage-paid return mailing label is also included. Once you have tried on your pieces, place the items you don't want into the mailing bag, affix the return label, then drop the package off at the post office. Unwanted items are to be mailed back within 5 days (verified by tracking number), otherwise you will be charged for all the items. The product info sheet in your package will include the "return by" date. Make sure your package is scanned in at the post office before that date. The sheet says drop it in a mailbox, but I highly recommend you attend a postal outlet to have the package scanned in and get a receipt with tracking number.

The retail cost for each item is listed on the product sheet. If you keep one to four items, you pay full price, minus your $24.95 styling fee credit. If you keep all five items, you get a 25% discount, on top of the styling fee credit. GST is extra. If you decide to return everything, you lose the $24.95 styling credit. And remember, if you don't return your unwanted items by the posted  date, you will be charged for everything, with a 25% discount. Items must be returned in their unused, unworn condition, with tags still attached (if applicable).

First look

Moa Belted Sleeveless Dress (Retail $59)
At first look this dress seemed promising. I like the colour and pattern, v-neck style, shape, and the lightweight knit fabric. The fit wasn't great though. It's way too short for my 5'7 frame (not at all work appropriate) and the fit is weird around the hips and middle, possibly because of the pockets. A size up may have helped, but the length was a deal breaker. It's too bad because this could have been great. - Returned

Moa Mint Waterfall Chiffon Blazer (Retail $49)
Yikes this colour is way outside my comfort zone. I figured I would give it a try and it's a definite no-go. I am pale skinned with red hair. Pastels like this do absolutely nothing for me. If this one came in black I would be all over it. It's flowy and lightweight, which would be perfect for summer days when the a/c is working overtime at the office. - Returned
(Note - I found this piece on sale at Zulily for $23.99 CDN

Moa Black & White Printed Blouse with Buttons (Retail $49)
At first I wasn't into this. I'm not a fan of tunic style tops, but again, I kept an open mind and tried it on. I like the pattern, fabric, and 3/4 sleeves, but I wasn't sure about the asymmetrical, boxy style of the bottom. The top half I liked, but it was too tight across the bust so the top buttons gaped. The bottom half was terrible. It added bulk where I don't have bulk. - Returned
(Note - I found this piece on sale at Zulily for $23.99)

Le Lis Floral Back Top (Retail $44)
I like the concept of this top, and the back floral insert is really cute. I didn't like the fabric or colour of the t-shirt portion of the top though. It's very clingy and see-through. - Returned

Le Lis Heathered Pocket Vest in Wine (Retail $49)
This is something I would never pick out for myself, but I was drawn to it. I love the colour and fabric and the style is very comfy. It could be the perfect transition piece between seasons. I was really torn. I liked the top but it's just too long. I don't like the asymmetrical look in the front. The sides come down mid-leg and makes me look short. If it cut off straight at the hip, it would have been perfect. - Returned

This wasn't a great batch for me. While I liked things about each piece, none of them really worked for me, due to size, shape, or style. If I'm paying retail prices for clothing, I have to absolutely love the item and feel fabulous in it. None of these pieces gave me that feeling so I had to pass. The clothing pieces themselves were okay. The items are unique and interesting, but wearable. The quality isn't the best for certain brands and most of my items were made of polyester or poly-blends. I found the price points are pretty good, with my items ranging from $44 to $59. Most items in the Frock Box collection will range from $34 to $69.

I like the concept of having an online "personal stylist". Receiving clothing by mail allowed me to style the items with pieces from my own wardrobe to see how they would work. It's "try before you buy" with clothing - so easy and convenient, and all in the comfort of my own home. I also like the surprise element because I was forced outside my comfort zone and tried items that I never would have picked up in store. I'm going to give it another month or two and see how it goes. I should also note that there isn't an option on the website or within your account to give feedback on your Frock Box. If you want to give feedback to your stylist, send an e-mail with your likes and dislikes so they can better tailor future shipments to suit your needs. I've already e-mailed Frock Box with my thoughts on these items and some more personal details about me and my body shape. I also included two full body photos to help them pick pieces that will work better. Here's hoping next month is more successful!

  2. This subscription service is really strange...I don't see styling here. I will never buy such clothes at that price.
