The theme for January is "Bathe".
So much more than just a perfunctory routine, bathing is one of our most intimate rituals of relaxation and renewal. For many of us who lead busy lives, the shower is the one sure place to which we are able to make a daily retreat, and where we may tend, gently, to the rejuvenation of both body and mind.

In Turkey, since ancient times the bathhouse, or hammam, has been a place where the luxuries of heat and water sooth the senses and the spirit. Many of the crafts in this month’s box are inspired by this culture’s longstanding reverence for the act of bathing.

I traveled to Turkey last October and had the opportunity to visit a hammam. It was a very relaxing and soothing experience. I also brought home no less than FIVE Turkish towels, much to my boyfriend's chagrin, since a few of said towels ended up in his pack. I loved browsing the textile shops and touching all the gorgeous towels and blankets. I really wanted a Pestemal Bathrobe, but accepted that it would never fit in my pack. I'm still debating whether or not to buy one online and have it shipped! If you find yourself in Istanbul, check out Jennifer's Hammam, a great textile shop owed by a Canadian ex-pat, or Dervis in the Grand Bazaar. Regardless of my vast Turkish towel collection, I was still excited when I saw the spoilers for this box and couldn't wait to get my hands on another Turkish towel!

GlobeIn Signature Handwoven Basket ($12)
Handcrafted from discarded palm leaves by indigenous Oaxacan artisans and colored using natural, water-borne paints, each basket can take up to six hours to weave.
Each month the products come inside a handwoven basket from Mexico. I've been reusing them for gifts instead of using wrapping paper or a gift bag.

Alaffia Lemongrass Citrus African Black Soap ($4.49)
Your soap is made from a centuries old recipe of handcrafted shea butter and West African palm kernel oil.
What bath is complete without some soap!

Alaffia Shea & Red Palm Body Lotion (2oz, $2.99)
Soothe your skin with the unique properties of red palm oil. Completely unrefined, the oil retains all of its natural vitamins and antioxidants, including a rich store of pro-vitamin A. This lotion smells fresh and lightly floral and the formula blends in well.

Silk Face Scrub ($10)
Turkish artisan Emre Ustun creates his own transformations, using a traditional hand loom to weave raw silk into the most delicate of skincare products. Made from 100% raw cocoon silk, your new antibacterial facial mitt gently purifies the face and neck, eliminating lifeless cells and boosting collagen production in your own most vulnerable areas of skin. Another Turkish creation to go in the bathe box. The scrub is used by placing it over your three middle fingers, then rubbing it in circular motions over your skin.

Hand Towel (Spring Green, $12)
Your soft new cotton hand towel is the result of dedication to traditional craft combined with an eye for inspiration from around the globe. This is an oversize soft terry cloth towel. This isn't a traditional Turkish towel, but it's nice.

Pestemal Bath Towel (Royal Blue, $25)
A traditional accessory to the Turkish bath, your 100% cotton pestemal towel absorbs water faster than a regular towel, dries quickly, and folds up small.
I LOVE Turkish towels. This one is thinner than some of the ones I picked up during my travels, but it's very soft, and they get softer with use and washing.

The towel itself is huge, as are all Turkish towels. They work great as a beach or pool towel. I've also used mine as a shawl in a pinch. They do dry quickly and absorb quite well. I paid no more than 25 TL (Turkish Lira) for the towels I picked up, which is about $8.25 US.

The January GlobeIn Artisan Box featuring the "Bathe" theme included six products with a retail value around $66.50. It's a great theme and includes several quality and useful items. Obviously I love the Turkish towel and it's already been added to my collection. The lotion is lovely, as is the soap.

This box is still available to purchase as a "one time" option (no subscription) for $50. You can check it out here. You even  get to select your bath towel and hand towel colours. If it's just the towel that interests you, that is available as well for $25. Check it out here.
