Yarn Crush Review - September 2015 - Canadian Knitting Subscription Box

This box was provided complimentary for review.

What is it? Yarn Crush
How Much? $32.99/month or $34.99/bi-monthly, + tax & $8.50 shipping   (US$)
What’s in it? At least 1 full-sized skein of yarn, pattern for a small to medium knitting project, notions to complete the project, and a fun bonus gift!

Yarn Crush is a new subscription box for knitters, based in Pickering Ontario. August is their inaugural box. Each month you’ll receive at least one or two full-sized skeins of yarn, along with a beautiful knitting pattern, designed by Yarn Crush. You will also receive fun or useful extras. The retail value of what you receive every month is always guaranteed to be higher than the subscription price, so no matter what, you'll always get a great deal!

The graphic design work on the inserts this month is great. I love the bright and fun feather motif. All the cards are professionally printed on quality card stock. With all the custom design work and printing, Yarn Crush gets high points for presentation.

Yarn Crush includes high-quality, beautiful yarns from indie dyers, small businesses, and also well-known yarn brands. Along with the pattern included in the box, Yarn Crush also sources other patterns, for knitting and crocheting, that will work perfectly with the month's yarn selection and posts them on the Yarn Crush blog. While the box is aimed at knitters, crocheters can also benefit from Yarn Crush.

The pattern for September is called Tail Feathers and it's for a pair of mid-calf socks. For non-subscribers, ou can find it for purchase on Ravelry (value $5.99). Subscribers will receive an e-mail with a promo code for a free download, plus a PDF version for non-Ravelry members. My mom is a Ravelry member, so she was able to download the pattern and add it to her collection.
Tail Feathers is a pretty yet practical sock that combines narrow cables with a simple feathery lace pattern reminiscent of the plumage and tail feathers of a peacock.
Violette Yarn Co. True North Strong Sock Weight Yarn ($20)
This is a Yarn Crush exclusive, developed by Violette Yarn Co. to pair perfectly with this month's peacock-inspired knitting pattern. It's a blend of 80% Leicester wool and 20% nylon. It's a strong blend that's easy to care for and ideal for socks. The blue/green colour is very vibrant!

Self-Measuring Tape ($8.99)
This is an accessory added in to accurately measure yourself for a flawless fit.

Yarn Crush Pocket Mirror ($2.99)
At first I thought this was a button or magnet. A mirror is much more useful and is perfect for the purse.

Soak Laundry Detergent - Minisoak Assorted Travel Pack ($11)
Soak is modern care for the laundry you love. It's perfect for dedicates, especially knits. This pack includes eight 5ml sample packs in Yuzu, Fig, Celebration, and Lacey. Perfect for travel!

Heel Foot Cream Sample
Heel is nourishing care for feet worth of hand-knit socks. It's wonderfully scented and non-greasy.

The September Yarn Crush box included the pattern and yarn necessary to complete a pair of socks, plus four great extras. The retail value of this box is $48.97US. The box costs $32.99US plus shipping, or less if you get a longer term subscription. It's a great project this month. I love the yarn and it actually is reminiscent of a peacock! Even better than the yarn are all the extras included this month. The measuring tape will come in handy for my mom. Not only does she knit, but she also quilts and sews little dresses and outfits for my nieces. The Soak travel pack is a great addition and will also come in handy for travel and dedicates.

The last two Yarn Crush boxes have been so great that I really wish I knew how to knit. I've tried a couple times before and failed miserably. This box is making me want to try again!

  1. I have watched a few reviews on this yarn box, love it I notice it is in US$ and postage is high ... I would love to order this yarn crush box as well as their sock box , disappointing it isn't geared towards Canadians. Do you know if they will be offering this in Canada?

    1. Yarn Crush is Canadian - based in Ontario and the boxes ship from Ontario. They charge in US dollars, but this is quite common for Canadian companies.

    2. Do you know why they don't give the cost in Canadian dollars ? Also are we required to pay duties ? I'm just don't like surprise extra cost 🤔

    3. They bill in US dollars, which is why prices are listed in US dollars. It's a very common practice for Canadian companies to bill in US dollars since many of their suppliers are American and they pay their wholesalers in US dollars. There is no duty because the box ships from within Canada. The company is in Ontario. The shipping cost is actually cheap compared to what Canada Post actually charges. It's likely that Yarn Crush is subsidizing the shipping costs by a few dollars per box.

    4. They say includes HST. does that includes the shipping taxes? I just want to know how much I should be expecting to come off my card.

    5. I'm sorry, I don't have that information. You are best to contact Yarn Crush directly for an answer.
