What is it? Carnivore Club
How Much? $50 per month, includes shipping. $55 one time purchase. Gift options also available.
What’s in it?  4 to 6 selections of handcrafted cured meats from top artisans

Carnivore Club is a Canadian subscription service that aims to satisfy your inner carnivore! Carnivore Club sends and impressive faux-wood box filled with 4-6 handcrafted cured meats from top artisans.

Each month’s box is themed around one producer specializing in a particular style of cured meats: French Charcuterie, Italian Salumi, Spanish Chorizo, South African Biltong and Artisanal Jerky are but a few.

Carnivore Club offers monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly subscriptions. You can also purchase a single month (non-recurring) to try it out, or purchase gift subscriptions for your friends. Cancellation is easy and can be done any time through your online account. They also have a referral program, which earns you $15 credit for every friend that signs up and places an order.
The supplier for August is Carmichael's Meats, a leading Ontario carrier of exotic and niche meats you won't find widely elsewhere.

Carnivore Club meats are cured, which means they have a shelf life of 40-60 days when stored at room temperature. The meats can be shipped safely as is, but once your box arrives, it's recommended that the meats be refrigerated. For maximum flavour, let the meat rest at room temperature for 10 minutes prior to serving.

Salami Chips (2 x 25g bags, $11.98)
Made from pure premium salami in Ontaria, Salami Chips are high in protein and make a great snack. It's said to be an alternative to jerky - crunchy and meat. I didn't find the chips crunchy at all. It was more like someone left a meat platter out overnight and the salami dried out. I wouldn't buy these.

Bison Pepperettes (8 pack, $10)
I'm familiar with bison (aka buffalo) and often substitute ground beef for ground bison. It's a leaner, richer meat and these pepperettes are a nice treat.

Kangaroo Pepperettes (8 pack, $10)
Kangaroo!? Yup. And guess what? It's pretty good. Actually the seasonings were so heavy that I couldn't really taste the "flavour" of the meat itself. I served this for a snack over the weekend and all my guests agreed it was tasty and not at all offensive (as we kind of expected at first!).

The product card included a lot of information about kangaroo meat and how it is harvested. The wild kangaroo population has exploded in recent years so the Australian government allows harvesting, under strict control, for commercial purposes. Wild kangaroos aren't raised on farms and they're harvested humanly under strict government guidelines. The indigenous kangaroos live free-range, eating only organic food in the wild, making it a more Eco-friendly source for commercial meat (versus conventional factory farming set ups). Read more about it here

German Salami ($15)
I learned after I sliced this that it needed to be peeled. Oops! The salami was nice and lean, but I found it lacked seasoning. Maybe that's normal for this style; I'm not really sure.

SOSS Spice Steak Bite ($8)
According to the product card, this box was supposed to include Carmichael Summer Sausage. Instead I received this bottle of steak seasoning. I'm not sure if it's a substitution or if it was meant to be a bonus item and the summer sausage was left out by mistake. I used the spice on steaks over the weekend and it's good. There is a bit of bite in it from peppery spices.

The August Carnivore Club box, featuring a selection of meats from Carmichael's in Ontario, included five products with a retail value of $55.98 CDN. This box costs $50 CDN with shipping. Aside from one product being subbed out for another, it's a great box. I like that they included new and interesting products to try out. The Salami Chips are brand new on the Canadian market so I was excited to try them. I've never consumed kangaroo meat before, so that was another great one to try.
