Birchbox Review - August 2015 - Canadian Beauty Subscription Box

This post contains referral links.
** Birchbox is no longer operating in Canada**

What is it? Birchbox Canada
How Much? $10/month plus $4.95 shipping, or $159.40/year including shipping (CDN $)
What’s in it? Five personalized beauty samples, tailored to your profile.

Birchbox is the premiere beauty sampling service in the US and it's the service that launched the entire beauty box craze. Established in New York in 2010 by two friends, Birchbox now has operations in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada.

Your samples will include beauty products from all different categories, including makeup, skincare, haircare, and fragrance. You'll get to try cult favorites, new launches, and more. Birchbox will also try to tailor products to meet your beauty needs by following your Beauty Profile. Things like hair colour, eye colour, skin tone, and hair texture is  taken into consideration.

Soak it up!

As summer peaks (temp-wise and watermelon-consumption-wise), we're taking advantage of every last minute. That means embracing air-dried hair, ensuring our skincare is SPF-heavy and keeping our makeup minimal.

I love the swimming pool print on the box this month. It even has a shallow end and a deep end!

First look

Crabtree & Evelyn Ultra Moisturizing Hand Therapy (25g, $5.50)
The luxurious and restorative skin therapy rewards users with instantly smoother, hydrated hands thanks to nourishing vitamins and antioxidants.
This is a new brand for Birchbox Canada. It's nice to see them come out with new samples. This is a nice, rich cream, but I don't love the scent.

Number 4 Blow Dry Lotion (30ml, $7.20)
Part thermal protector and part leave-in treatment, it’s packed with natural botanicals to keep your strands healthy and smooth.
Another blow dry serum. Nothing exciting.

amika Nourishing Mask (20ml, $4.33)
This lush mask works as a weekly treatment or an everyday deep conditioner. In the shower, smooth a generous amount through damp hair, concentrating on the ends. Let the mask sink in for two to five minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Another hair mask... nothing exciting.

LAQA & Co. Cheeky Lip in Cray Cray (Coral Peach - 1 tube, $8.67)
Each creamy formula works as both cheek and lip color, and the sleek gold crayon makes it ultraeasy to dab on.
The peach colour is terrible for my complexion. It would have been okay if it was a sheer colour, but unfortunately it was very peach.

skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (1 pair, $4.13)
Skyn's cooling eye gels—loaded with Icelandic glacial water and Arctic botanical extracts—are unbeatably refreshing. They reduce the appearance of puffiness and fine lines while working to brighten, firm, and soothe delicate undereye skin.
I don't know if these work, but I love using eye gels. I put a pair on and lay back and relax.

My August Birchbox Canada included five items with an approximate value just under $30 CDN. This box cost me $13.28 CDN with a year long pre-paid subscription. My box included one makeup item, two hair care items, and two skincare items. I found it odd that my box included Blow Dry Lotion when the product card this month says we are supposed embrace air-dried hair, but I've come to learn that the theme write ups don't usually relate to the samples anyway. I was happy to see the skyn Iceland eye gels. I'm a fan of their products and hope to sample more in upcoming boxes. The only product I absolutely do not like is the LAQA lip pencil.

A sneak peek (of sorts) has been released for September. Next month, every box will include a special bonus:
This month, we’re celebrating our amazing subscribers—you're the reason we do what we do! As a thank you, every September box will include a 20% off code to use in our Shop!
