Birchbox Canada Review - June 2015 - Canadian Beauty Subscription Box

This post contains referral links.
** Birchbox is no longer operating in Canada**
What is it? Birchbox Canada
How Much? $10/month plus $4.95 shipping, or $159.40/year including shipping (CDN $)
What’s in it? Five personalized beauty samples, tailored to your profile.

Birchbox is the premiere beauty sampling service in the US and it's the service that launched the entire beauty box craze. Established in New York in 2010 by two friends, Birchbox now has operations in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada.
Before the review, I will include the same caveat I include every month: the Canadian site is completely separate from the US site, as are their social media accounts. What you see promoted for US subscribers through is not always available to Canadians through The Canadian site doesn't offer all the cool perks and promos that the US site gets either (Birchbox Aces, Sample Choice, Limited Edition boxes etc). If you are signing up based on what you see on the US Birchbox site, you will be very disappointed. To get an idea of what sort of samples you might receive from, scroll through the Birchbox CA shop and check out the brands. They've been adding more and more every month, but we still don't have as much variety.

This month we are saying YES!
Adventure is a state of mind. It's about exploring the unknown, dreaming beyond the horizon, and letting go of the word "no." What's on your list? Scuba diving with sharks? Sleeping under the starts (hey, your backyard counts)? Here's to adventures big and small, near and far.
First look

The first thing I noticed from this product card, is that the June spoiler item, a full sized Eyeko eyeliner, was not included in my box. I posted about the spoiler in May and I screen capped the spoiler image direct from the Birchbox Canada website. I e-mailed Birchbox Ops about the issue and this is the reply:
Unfortunately, we were unable to include the originally promised Eyeko Fat Liner in any of our subscribers June boxes as these eyeliners are currently being held up at customs. Just to be transparent about the Eyeko sample, we really were blindsided by the customs issue and the hold up with it, and it came down so close to the wire there wasn't much recourse from there. While we’re not able to send the Eyeko Fat Liner at this time, we are crossing our fingers to be able to send it in a future box.
I have no issue with the reasoning behind the Eyeko product not being included. These things happen, a lot!  I'm just wondering why they didn't share this with subscribers. Were they hoping we forgot about the spoiler? It's kind of an odd way to approach things. Anyway, if anyone else is disappointed by the lack of Eyeko Fat Liner, e-mail Birchbox and you may end up with a bonus in your points bank.

Emi-Jay Hair Tie ($2.40 CDN)
This is a bonus item, so we actually received six products this month.

PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray (30ml, $5.50)
I feel like I've tried just about every texturizing spray on the market, but not this one! It's a good product for an early summer box. Casual beachy waves are a summer hair-do staple!

Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleaner (30ml, $1.88)
I love this fruity and floral scent.

Naobay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer (20ml, $18)
This has a pleasant orange scent and it's more liquid-y than creamy, but it does a good job moisturizing and it's light.

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Brightening Illuminator (1g, $11.64)
This is the product we received in place of the Eyeko liner. Highlighting products seem to be all the rage right now. I haven't gotten into highlighting and contouring so this is a pass for me.

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel (5ml, $4.83)
This is an acid-free peel mask that works in, you guessed it, 3 minutes! It's supposed to bind to dead cells on the skin then wash away without any harsh acids or abrasives.

My June Birchbox Canada included six products with an approximate value of $44.25 CDN. This box costs $14.95 CDN, including shipping. It's a pretty good box this month for my needs and preferences, but someone who prefers makeup probably won't get much from this box. Birchbox tends to send more skincare and body products than cosmetics these days, so that's something to keep in mind if you are thinking of subscribing.

  1. The design on this month's box looks so soothing to me. Nice stuff you received.

  2. We were box twins this month! I love how the Beauty Protector stuff all smells like Pink Sugar.

    1. It totally smells like Pink Sugar. That was my go-to scent when I was 20!

  3. I was thinking of joining but the samples are so small. I feel like we can get samples these sizes for free. Do you think ipsy is better? I still don't know if I can justify $15 on samples since they charge Canadians for shipping 😕

    1. Ipsy does offer more full size products each month, but with the exchange rate it's around $20 CDN per month.
