Birchbox Canada Review - January 2015 - Canadian Beauty Subscription Box

** Birchbox is no longer operating in Canada**

What is it? Birchbox Canada
How Much? $10/month plus $4.95 shipping, or $159.40/year including shipping (CDN $)
What’s in it? Five personalized beauty samples, tailored to your profile.

Birchbox is one of the first beauty subscription services. It's the premiere beauty sampling service in the US and it's the service that launched the entire beauty box craze. Established in New York in 2010 by two friends, Birchbox now has operations in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, and now... Canada! Birchbox announced in mid-November they would begin operating in Canada. This is the second box for Canadian subscribers.

The Canadian site is completely separate from the US site, so don't expect to receive the same samples that American subscribers are receiving. We also don't get all the special features our friends to the south enjoy, like Sample Choice, Birchbox Aces, and all those fun Limited Edition boxes. Hopefully in the future the Canadian site will grow up to be like it's American cousin.

To get an idea of what sort of samples you might receive, scroll through the Birchbox CA shop and check out the brands. Those are the same brands they are sending out for sampling. Again, hopefully in the future there is more choice and selection for the Canadian site, because right now it's pretty limited.

We're speeding full force into 2015 with a vow to make the most of every minute—starting now! And we can't think of a better way to begin than with some must-have beauty picks to help you look and feel your best. So go ahead: Take your samples for a spin and help us ring in an even more beautiful New Year.
First look & Product card!

Tocca Cremo de Mano in Cleopatra/Grapefruit Cucumber (1oz, $5)
The secret to this intensely hydrating cream is an indulgent blend of shea butter, avocado oil, and aloe.
I've seen this brand in the Birchbox shop, but never tried it. The cucumber scent is nice and refreshing.

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask (1oz, $7.50)
The formula is loaded with antioxidants to neutralize damaging free radicals. Argan oil, honey, amber, and crushed pearls (if the mask’s creamy texture wasn’t proof enough of its luxuriousness) revive strands and preserve their youthful texture and shine. What’s more, the mask works with all hair types, and is cruelty-free.
This sample comes in the form of two 0.5oz jars. The instructions say only a quarter size amount is required for each application, so a 1oz sample will last quite a while.

Model Co. Party Proof Matte Lipstick in Dusk Till Dawn (Set single, $7.67)
The concentrated, vitamin-rich formula heals dryness while coating lips in long-lasting color.
Birchbox sells these deluxe sample tube lipsticks in a trio set for $23. This colour is part of the Neutrals trio. A full size lipstick from ModelCo is $18.

Embroyolisse Lait-Crème Concentre (5ml, $1.87)
This concentrated formula is rich without being heavy, thanks to shea butter, aloe, and soy proteins. It absorbs quickly without any residue.
Along with a moisturizer, Birchbox says this "doubles as a makeup remover, post-shave soother, and all-over body lotion".

Folle de Joie Eau de Parfum (2ml sample vial, $2.32 )
The perfume opens with a burst of freshness from an intimate blend of calming citrus and a light woodsy floral, giving away to playful hints of cognac. Its middle notes—jasmine and Damascenia rose—give the fragrance a carefree, summery vibe. Finally, warm base notes of spicy woods and rich leather add a seductive finish.
I've read lots of great reviews about this perfume so I really wanted to try it and was quite happy to receive a sample this month. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the reviews of me. A bit too floral for my tastes.

My January Birchbox contained five products, valued at $24.36 CDN. I paid about $13.28 CDN for this box (with a year subscription). I'm happy to receive the Folle de Joie sample, even though it's not my favourite. The Tocca hand cream is great, and Tocca is another brand I see all over but have never tried. The ModelCo lipstick isn't my shade so I think it will be swapped. Overall it's a good box. The value is good and the sample sizes are decent. I like that I'm getting to sample all of Birchbox's cult products, that I have seen promoted online through the US site for a couple of years. However, I'm a little concerned that there isn't much brand variety for the Canadian Birchbox right now. There aren't nearly as many brands available in the Canadian Birchbox shop as there is in the US Birchbox shop. Hopefully more products are added over the coming months.
