What is it? Beauty Box 5
How Much? $12/month, $30/quarter, $99/year  plus $3 shipping per box
What's in it? 5 samples from your favourite beauty brands

Beauty Box 5 is a beauty sampling service that claims to send 5 deluxe or full sized products every month. The boxes ship from Houston, Texas and usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive. BB5 does not provide tracking information or e-mail notification once the box ships, but this box usually takes about ten days to arrive to me in BC. This one shipped January 15th and arrived January 27th.

The theme for January 2015 is all about saying hi to fresh possibilities. Now that I've gone through this box and read some comments online, this thought makes me laugh a little, and not in a good way.

Product Card

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in Strip-Tease ($1) - Discontinued Product
This particular style (#540) was sold in 2012 and is no longer available for purchase, except through Amazon and Ebay. I saw this style for sale at Target for $1 late last year, so that is how I valued this product. The current styles sell for $8.75 at Walmart US (or $11.49 CDN at Well.ca).

Coastal Scents Eye Shadow Sampler with Mint Condition, Sundried, Stone Cold, and Wild Raisin. (4 shadows, $0.67)
A full size Coastal Scents pallet is $14.95 for 88 eye shadows, which means this 4-pan sample is practically worthless. At least I got some decent colours. Other people received crazy brights and neons!

Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout (0.08oz, $2.99) - Discontinued Product
There is A LOT of backlash about this product. First, BB5 is promoting this as being a Fusion Beauty product. It may have been once, but Fusion Brands no longer distributes Ultraflesh. The Ultraflesh Facebook page has not been updated since 2011, and they don`t have a website. The only place to buy this mascara is through the wholesaler I linked above or from third party re-sellers on Amazon. There is no reputable source to buy this product. Sephora stopped selling Ultraflesh in 2012. All signs point to this being old, discontinued product... which explains why the tube is completely dried up and there is little to no product on the wand. If you received one, try swiping the wand across your hand and see what happens. This is going in the trash.

Garnier Fructis Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo (50ml, $0.55)
Does this product need any commentary? I think you have an idea how I feel about this. Pricing is based on a full size costing $4.19 for 384ml.

Softsoap Nutri Serums Body Nourishing Wash (50ml, $0.62)
Ditto for this one. Pricing is based on a full size costing $5.49 for 443ml.

When I first opened my January 2015 Beauty Box 5, I wasn't completely unimpressed. I didn't look great, but it didn't look terrible either. However, after looking into the products further and working out an approximate value, I can easily say this is the absolute worst box I have ever received from Beauty Box 5. I have been subscribing since February 2013, so that is a bold statement to make. This box included two discontinued products and two drugstore body products that are regularly given out for free through Brand Sampler. The only decent product, one I would actually expect to see in a beauty sampling box, is the Coastal Scents eye shadow quad, and it only has a value of $0.67. I refuse to assign value to discontinued products, so this box only has an estimated value of $1.84. If I was going to be generous and value everything as listed above, it would be more like $5.83. Beauty Box 5 sells boxes for $12, plus $3 shipping to Canada. Would you pay $15 for this?

My Beauty Box 5 journey is coming to an end next month. My 2nd year-long term is up at the end of February and I e-mailed requesting cancel a couple of months ago. I just e-mailed again to re-confirm that my account has been cancelled. After this box, I definitely don't want this subscription to auto-renew. They claim to send deluxe and full size products from "your favorite beauty brands" but all I've received lately is junk I could at the dollar store.

Save your money. Don't subscribe to Beauty Box 5.

  1. Wow. Echoes of Glymm and Glossybox with their expired product and drugstore brands. Thanks for the heads up - I'll pass on Beauty Box 5 going forward (though I secretly loved your eye-rolling reviews of them!)

    1. Good point... getting harder for them to partner with top brands could be a sign they are on their way out.

  2. This box is pretty disappointing. From what I've seen of all the unboxings of the Beauty Box, totally agree that you can get some of the stuff in there for free or its such a low value product, its not even worth it.

    1. Even with all the promo codes they keep throwing out (free boxes, major discounts on 1yr subs), this box isn't worth it... My monthly cost is about $7 per box... and it's still not worth it!

  3. I just checked my box & it was shipped Jan 14 as was yours. So much for being told on Jan 14 that it had been shipped with the rest of their boxes on Jan 8. I'm so over these guys.

    1. There is so much competition in the Canadian market now.... with Birchbox, Ipsy, Glossybox, and Topbox, there is no reason anyone should settle for such a sub-par service like this one.

  4. Wow, thanks for doing your homework! I just got my box and haven't really taken a good look at everything yet. This is disgraceful! My sub. is up in Feb. too and I already made sure to cancel last month.

    1. It's kind of sad that we even have to do this much homework and background checking on products received in a box... I just don't trust BB5 at all so I go over everything with a fine tooth comb and read through MUT and other comment sites.

  5. I had the exact same experience/thoughts regarding the mascara and box as awhole. Maybe I'll review the boxes I get as I'm locked in to August.. So we can all get some comic relief still!

    1. That would be great! I would like to keep an eye on them to see if they improve.

  6. Thanks for the review. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I got my box. I got one of those circus colour shadow quads. Definitely canceling my subscription too.

  7. I'm so happy I unsubscribed last fall. BB5 just isn't worth the money or the wait. I live in Nova Scotia and I'd get my month near the end of the month or even the beginning of the next month.

  8. This box was so terrible - my eyeshadow quad were the neons which made the entire experience even worse! I am done my subscription in March and I will not be sad to see it go. Each month it seems to get worse - I wonder if BB5 will be putting out an announcement sometime in the near future about some further company changes...?

  9. I actually think the shampoo is discontinued as well?! I checked the website, and the same bottle is now called "Fresh and Clean" not "Daily Care" - thought I should mention it, that makes it 2 discontinued products?! Boo - mine is done in May so I'm hoping they improve before then, but my hopes are not high!

  10. I got two boxes from BB5 in the summer and rage cancelled. I'm glad I did, especially seeing what has been sent out the past few months. So many discontinued items this month.

  11. Wow! How I wish I would've read this before wasting my hard earned money on this box... I paid for a year subscription only to email and cancel after my second box.. it's a waste of my time I tell you!
