What is it? Beauty Box 5
How Much? $12/month, $30/quarter, $99/year  plus $3 shipping per box
What's in it? 5 samples from your favourite beauty brands

Beauty Box 5 is a beauty sampling service that sends 5 deluxe or full sized products every month. The boxes ship from Houston, Texas and usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive. BB5 does not provide tracking information or e-mail notification once the box ships, but this box usually takes a week to arrive to me in BC.

The theme for December is "Merry & Bright". The box is supposed to be full of goodies to "brighten up your complexion all December long".

First Look

Absolute! New York Nail Polish Remover Pads in Lemon (32 pads, $2.99)
Nail polish remover pads are one of my favouite things. They are great for on-the-go and traveling. Absolute! New York is a Nicka K. Cosmetics brand so this is the 4th Nicka K. product BB5 has sent since January 2014.

Nanacoco Nail Polish in Stardust (Full size, $3.95)
A gold sparkly glitter polish. I already have something similar so this will be gifted. This is the 7th nail polish I have received from BB5 this year (since January 2014) and the third Nanacoco product (2nd nail polish) since August. I note these details because it shows how little brand variety there is with a BB5 subscription.

Jaqua Bath & Body Collection Cocoa Buttercream Frosting  Hand Cream (2 oz travel size, $12.50)
This lotion smells okay. I feel it's overpriced, but that's something BB5 has no control over. I read some feedback about parabens and other nasties, but BB5 isn't known as a Eco-concious or natural beauty box so I can't fault them for including something laden with chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Juice Beauty Stem Cell Moisturizer (0.26oz/7.8ml sample, $9.94)
Moisturize with a proprietary blend of fruit stem cells infused into a Vitamin C, resveratrol-rich grapeseed formula to aggressively firm and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
This is the third Juice Beauty product I received in December. FabFitFun and Glossybox included different Juice products. I nearly  have a full line up now! This is a great sample from BB5.

Lucky Brand Lucky Number 6 Eau De Parfume Sample (2.4ml, $0.60)
This is a fragrance that has been around for decades so I'm not sure why it would show up in a beauty box. I remember it from high school. It's also heavily discounted on Amazon (linked above). A 50ml bottle (1.7oz) is on sale for $12.50,which makes the sample worth 60 cents.

The December Beauty Box 5 included five products with an approximate retail value of $29.98 US. It's not the worst BB5 I have received in recent months, but it's still not the best. I don't mind the nail polish remover wipes and the Juice Beauty moisturizer is great. The rest is very "meh" and will be gifted or donated. I have two months left on my BB5 subscription and that will be it. I am not re-newing for a third year. This box is still very affordable, especially when you use a promo code, but there is so much more out there for Canadians now. I don't want to keep settling for "meh" each month.

If for some reason you want to give Beauty Box 5 a try,  grab one of these promo codes. I believe all the codes still work.
  • YEARLY84 will get you a year subscription for $84.15, plus $36 for the year of shipping ($3 per box). That works out to $10 per box, including shipping. This is the best deal around.
  • FREEBOXME or FREEBOX1 will get you the previous month's box free! This code is for new subscribers only.
  • HALFOFF will get you $6 off your first month's box. This is a good one for those that only want to sign up for a monthly or quarterly term.
For an alternative, in the same price range, check out Birchbox. It's $14.95 per month with shipping, or $159.40 per year. Those are Canadian dollars, while BB5 is US dollars, so it works out pretty well the same. If you had to pick one beauty box under $20, that would be my pick.
