** Birchbox is no longer operating in Canada**

What is it? Birchbox
How Much? $10/month plus $4.95 shipping, or $159.40/year including shipping
What’s in it? Five personalized beauty samples, tailored to your profile.

Birchbox is one of the first beauty subscription services. It's the premiere beauty sampling service in the US and it's the service that launched the entire beauty box craze. Established in New York in 2010 by two friends, Birchbox now has operations in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, and now... Canada! Birchbox announced in mid-November they would begin operating in Canada. December is the inaugural BirchBox.ca shipment.
Hooray! This box marks the very first month we’re delivering Birchboxes in Canada—and the first installment of your subscription (you trendsetter, you). What does that mean? For starters, your mailbox is about to get a lot more interesting.
Birchbox sends box filled with 4-5 deluxe makeup, skincare, and beauty samples each month. The box is $10, plus $4.95 shipping per month (Canadian dollars). The box ships via UPS from within Canada so shipping is quick, and there are no additional fees.

Once you've tried the products, you can go online and purchase full size versions from the Birchbox Shop. All the products from the monthly box ship free for that month. Birchbox also has a pretty lucrative rewards program. You can earn Birchbox Points by referring friends and reviewing products - 100 points is equivalent to $10 for use in the Birchbox Shop! Points are easy to earn and easy to use. Redeem your points for whatever you want, whenever you want.
Once you fall in love, you can buy full-size versions of your favorite products in the Birchbox Shop. Plus, you’ll find ideas and inspiration on our social media channels to help you get the most out of these picks, from product intel and how-to tutorials to info on the latest trends.

The actual box is smaller than I expected; just 5 1/4 inches by 7 1/4 inches. This isn't an issue at all - just something I noticed during the unboxing. The smaller green box contains small samples so they don't get tossed around the box in transit.
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle  (1oz, $3.25)
Beauty Protector’s leave-in mist is about as versatile as they come. It conditions, shields from heat and sun damage, and–of course–detangles, among other things. Plus, it’s 100% vegan and suitable for all hair types. - Full size is 8oz for $26.

Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenater (20g, $5.67)
This powerful exfoliator mimics the results of professional microdermabrasion, minus the potential for redness and sensitivity. First, papaya enzymes break down dead cells while evening out your skin tone. Next, dermatologist-approved microderm crystals fade the appearance of fine lines and acne scars, leaving skin smooth and free of imperfections. Finally, aloe vera, coconut, and vitamins B and E nourish fresh skin to keep it free of irritation. - Full size is 120g for $34.

Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream (15ml, $1.10)
This fast-absorbing cream hydrates skin with a blend of olive, coconut, and sweet almond oils, plus moisturizing shea butter. Lemon and mandarin extracts add an extra burst of refreshing citrus. - Full size is 355ml for $26.

Benefit Lollitint Cheek & Lip Stain (2.5ml, $7.20)
A hybrid of orchid and bubblegum pink, the easy-to-blend, smudge-proof formula provides a pop of cheery color that lasts all day. - Full size is 12.5ml for $36.

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner in Charcoal (0.8g, $12.74)
These luxe, creamy liners deliver bold color that lasts and lasts. Choose from a range of wearable shades, from basic black to eye-catching metallic. Vegan, cruelty-free, and paraben-free. - Full size is 1.13g for $18.

The inaugural Birchbox Canada shipment included five deluxe samples with an estimated retail value of $29.96 (CDN). I paid about $13.28 for this box, with a year subscription (yearly subscription is $159.40 Canadian, including tax and shipping). I am pretty happy with this box. The samples are all well sized with enough to get a few uses out of each. Everything is new to me, except for the Vastani product. I've received it twice before and I love it. Plus, Vasanti is a Canadian brand so it's nice to see it featured in Birchbox! I'm excited to try the Beauty Protector. I almost bought it full size from the Birchbox Shop last month but decided to hold off. Glad I did! The hand cream smells nice, but is quite perfumed. I love the eyeliner. It glides on silky smooth and I'm glad I received a neutral colour. I've tried other Benefit tints before but never Lollitint. I'm looking forward to the next Birchbox and I'm very happy that I opted for a year subscription. It's definitely worth it and it's the best value - you save $20 per year this way.

    1. I end up tossing most of my Ipsy bags. I'm finding Ipsy is including too much drugstore and low end stuff... the Tarte mascara this month is the first higher end product in a long time. I'm liking Birchbox because it feels more luxurious for less cost.

  3. I was a bit disappointed. They didn't send us the same boxes that US customers got. They received nice blue holiday boxes with different samples. I was happy with the spoilers, I just wish I would have known that we wouldn't get any of them in the Canadian box. It seems we just received samples from previous months that were left over. Also, not all of them shipped UPS, mine was sent Canada Post and took over 15 days to arrive (doesn't really seem fair that some got snail mail while others got express). The box is also too big for my mailbox, luckily I was home, but I don't want to trek to a post office (or UPS store) for a small sample box. I'll give it a few more months to see if it improves.

    1. BirchboxCA is separate from BirchboxUS so I didn't expect to get the same products... It's basically a franchise. I was a little disappointed to see the box slightly too large for a condo sized mail box, but that's life when it comes to subscription box ordering. I get a few delivery slips every week and take a walk to the post office when I have time. I'd prefer if they shipped mine CP instead of UPS... I wonder why two different methods were used.

  4. I am very happy with BirchBox so far. I have cancelled my TopBox subscription. Don't need both.

    1. Glymm has been out of business for over two years.
I'm a fan of Birchbox. I like it better than Topbox. Higher value samples and a great points/rewards program.
