Beauty Box 5 Review - November 2014 - Beauty Subscription Box + PROMO CODES

What is it? Beauty Box 5
How Much? $12/month, $30/quarter, $99/year  plus $3 shipping per box
What's in it? 5 samples from your favourite beauty brands

Beauty Box 5 is a beauty sampling service that sends 5 deluxe or full sized products every month. The boxes ship from Houston, Texas and usually take 1-2 weeks to arrive. BB5 does not provide tracking information or e-mail notification once the box ships. According to the shipping label this box shipped November 11, and arrived November 18th.

I saw a lot of spoilers and blog reviews before I received my box. I knew what to expect, but what I received was even worse than I imagined.

The theme for November is "Gracefully Grounded" and includes products to give your body some attention so it glows from within... or something.

Product Card

HASK Macadamia Oil Hair Treatment (18ml, $2.99)
This is the best item in the box and it's tiny!

Laura Ashley Body Butter in Sweet Peony (1.75oz, $3)
I don't mind the scent of this lotion and I could get over the weird texture. What I can't get over is the fact that my sealed package was very obviously unsealed, with one end peeled back. Not sure if it was a factory error or someone went fishing around for some lotion... either way, it was gross and this was tossed.

Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash (1.8oz, $0.50)
This is not unlike the ones people receive free in Sample Source mailings. If you haven't signed up for Brand Sampler yet, you really should! The last mailing was in October and I received 14 items all for free!

DenTek Floss Picks + Case ($0.75)
Dental picks in a beauty box. You have reached a new low, Beauty Box 5. These are normally sold in a pack of two cases or four cases. A four-pack of cases is $2.99, which makes this single pack worth less than 75 cents. And don't even get me started on BB5's new Instagram video trying to sell these as a nail art tool. Also of note, this case is not sealed in any way.

After Feather Refillable Travel Bottle ($4.50)
When I first heard we were getting an empty travel bottle I thought WTF BEAUTY BOX 5!?!?!? But now that it's here, and I read about what it is, I'm okay with this. The bottle is made from post-consumer recycled materials, and they give back 10% of profits to charity. It's sturdy and better quality than other travel bottles I have. I would never in a million years pay that much to buy another one though, and receiving an empty bottle still really sucks when you take the box as a whole. If the rest of the items were better, this would have been more appreciated.

The November Beauty Box 5 contained five products with an estimated value of $11.25. That's less than the cost of the monthly subscription. And if you are Canadian, paying $12 per month, plus $3 shipping... you were ripped off. I signed up for a year subscription using a promo code, and before they started charging the Canadian shipping fee, so I'm only paying about $8 a box. Even at that, this box is dismal. With Birchbox now shipping to Canada at only $14.95 per month (Canadian dollars), Beauty Box 5 is out of its league. I've already e-mailed requesting cancellation when my term is up in February. I am not willing to pay for another year of boxes full of crap I can either get for free from other sources, or for cheap from a dollar store.

If for some reason you want to give Beauty Box 5 a try,  grab one of these promo codes, because no one should pay full price for this box.
  • YEARLY84 will get you a year subscription for $84.15, plus $36 for the year of shipping ($3 per box). That works out to $10 per box, including shipping. This is the best deal around.
  • FREEBOXME or FREEBOX1 will get you the previous month's box free! This code is for new subscribers only.
  • HALFOFF will get you $6 off your first month's box. This is a good one for those that only want to sign up for a monthly or quarterly term.

For an alternative, in the same price range, check out Birchbox. It's $14.95 per month with shipping, or $160 per year. Those are Canadian dollars, while BB5 is US dollars, so it works out pretty well the same.

  2. I got exactly the same items. Was very disappointed! Just emailed them to cancel my year when it ends in February and I already subscribed to birchbox.

    1. Easily one of the top 5 worst of all BB5. September 2014 takes the cake as the worst.

  4. I signed up for a year, and just canceled after getting this horrible box. They said I should be getting a refund for the remainder...
