The much anticipated May Maven box is here and I am so excited to share it with you. May features the Fresh Twist Collection. This is the box that includes the much hyped Julep Plié wand. Watch this Youtube video for more information about the design and development of the Julep Plié. wand. There is too much information to regurgitate here. After watching that video in February, I pre-paid for my May box and waited patiently.

Normally I am a Modern Beauty, but since the Modern Beauty box did not include a Plié Wand, I switched to the Bombshell collection.

First Look
The first thing I noticed was a third polish. Jane included this as a bonus gift to all the subscribers that pre-paid for their boxes as part of the Plié Wand crowdfunding campaign. The colour is Yumi, a pink & silver holographic glitter, and it's named after Jane Park's daughter. ($14 value)

 The Bombshell colours are:
  • Saaya - Golden apricot shimmer ($14)
  • Laree - Golden pink taffeta shimmer ($14)
I picked Bombshell because these colours reminded me of sorbet. No other reason than that. I absolutely love Laree. Perfect Spring colour.

The Plié Wand comes in very nice, but maybe over the top, packaging. The kit includes the wand, an overcap and a "Precision brush". I'm not sure what makes it precision. The only thing I've noticed is that it is shorter than the regular Julep brushes The Plié Wand retails for $25, or $20 for Mavens. It is currently back ordered, but they are hoping to have more shipping by the first week of June.

As a bonus, I also received an extra Plié Wand Precision Brush (2 Pack). It includes an overcap and an overcap with brush. The overcap is the best part of the Plié Wand. I don't need to replace all my existing Julep brushes with new "precision" brushes. Simply pull off the square outer cap and replace with the round Plié overcap. The Plié Wand attaches to the overcap magnetically. Getting the Plié overcap off the round Julep polish cap was quite a task. Nothing a bit of elbow grease and a silicone jar opener couldn't help! The Precision Brush comes in a pack of 2 (as above) for $6, a 5-pack for $12, or a 10-pack for $10. Quite honestly, I don't think you need more than two, unless you are a hardcore nail painter. The overcap works with existing Julep brushes, so there is no need to swap out all your existing brushes for new ones, and like I said, the only difference is a couple centimetres of length.

The Plié Wand can be used straight like a pen, or articulated up, or down. This articulation allows the Plié Wand to rest against the hand, providing a leverage point and more stability, especially when painting with your non-dominant hand. With my right hand (dominant), I preferred the wand articulated downwards, so the wand rested against the back of my knuckle (left picture), which provided more stability. When painting with my left hand (non-dominant), I turned the wand up so the "elbow" rested in the crook between my thumb and forefinger, almost like holding a pen. My hand was much more steady and the painting was easier and more precise. I noticed others found it was best to use the wand straight when painting with their dominant hand, so it was more like a pen. Julep suggests playing around to see what works best. There are several different angles and ways to hold the wand. Here is another YouTube video about how to use the wand.

Julep also sells a Plié Wand Creativity Kit, which includes a dotting tool and a striping tool. Both are designed like the Plié overcap and fit interchangeably with the Plié Wand. The Creativity Kit retails for $10, or $8 for Mavens. It is also currently back ordered.

The May Julep Maven box definitely lived up to my expectations. I love the Plié Wand and can't wait to play with it some more. I've already recommended it to a few friends. This box was a bigger hit because of the added bonus products. Instead of just a Plié Wand and two polishes, I received a Plié Wand, three polishes, and a Plié Precision Brush set. I paid $19.99 for this box and received $73 worth of product ($64.60 Maven pricing). I'm super pleased this month. If you don't have a Plié Wand of your own yet, get on it!
