Beauty Box 5 Review - February 2014 - Beauty Subscription Box
This review has been updated since originally posted.
I received this box free with referral credits.
What is it? Beauty Box 5
How Much? $12/month, $30/quarter, $99/year plus $3 shipping per box
What's in it? 5 samples from your favourite beauty brands
This is the last box from my first year BB5 subscription. Actually January was my 12th box, but I was owed one box free earned prior to the referrals-for-boxes program being cancelled in June 2013.
This box shipped February 8th and arrived February 18th. February is the two year anniversary of Beauty Box 5 so I was hoping to see something special in this box. Last year we received a bonus product. Unfortunately, other than a birthday themed product card, this box was nothing to celebrate.
The product card has changed yet again. I like this one. No more random theme that doesn't tie in with the products. Just a sleek card with large product photos and detailed information. A coupon code for $10 off at MyNameNecklace.com was also included. The necklaces run around $45.
Warning: I'm about to rant! BB5 lists these products as being worth $14.95. EACH. I doubted the value so I did what I always do and went to Google to confirm. I was able to determine that the brand is actually Rockstar by Sprinkles. The only place I could find this brand online was through Groupon (and other group buy sites) and Ebay (and all the Ebay listings are from the past week - BB5 cast offs). This company does not have it's own website and from what I can find, these products are not sold in any retail stores. What's worse is that the pricing listed on the BB5 card is grossly inflated. An 8-bottle kit is being sold on Groupon for $12.99, with retail value listed at $25, making each bottle worth about $3.12. Everything about these products is shady. I will not be using them and I'm really disappointed that BB5 would include them with deceptive pricing and without proper packaging. And.... I just realized BB5 considers this two products instead of one, which is ridiculous since the sprinkles can't be used without the polish.
Screen grab from Groupon
*UPDATE* Beauty Box Tweeted the following:
I guess it's good to know that they didn't purposely attempt to deceive by passing a cheap nail polish off as being worth $15, but now we know each bottle is only worth $1.88. This brings the box value down to around $15. Oh and... Look what's available for sale in the BB5 Shop.
This is the 6th H2O+ product I've received from BB5. That's 6 for 13 boxes. Hand creams are useful so I'm okay with this.
I received this in my September 2013 Ipsy bag and haven't had a chance to use it yet. Mascara is always handy.
Seriously? John Frieda foil packets are the easiest samples to get for free. They are handed out at grocery & drug stores, included in magazines, and often available online through sample sites. I've tried the John Frieda Frizz Ease and Root Awakening lines this way. I feel cheated receiving products like this in a beauty box.
What do you think of the February Beauty Box 5?
