Best of the Boxes 2013 - Fall Edition

Now with Black Friday out of the way, it's time for a new feature at CDN Box Addict. Each season I am going to spotlight my top picks from the subscription boxes I received during the period. Jen at Ramblings of a Suburban Mom does a similar post each month, but I don't get nearly as many boxes as her, so my post will only be quarterly. The "Best of Boxes" posts, along with some other new product review posts (to be announced over time) will replace my monthly "Empties" posts. Instead of writing about all the products I use, I want to focus on all the products I love and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to my friends.

Without further ado, here are my favourite subscription box products from September to November!

Bespoke Post Review - November 2013 "The Butcher" - Men's Lifestyle Subscription Box

What is it?Bespoke Post Box of Awesome
How Much? $45 per month, plus $10-20 shipping to Canada
What's in it? Fresh & interesting lifestyle brands for men built around a central, unique theme

It's been a long time since I ordered a Bespoke Post Box of Awesome. The last one was in June. I really appreciate subscription boxes that have a skip option, and Bespoke Post is one of those boxes. On the first of the month BP releases their box options and subscribers have a few days to select or skip. I usually skip, since this is a box geared towards men, but once in a while a food themed box comes around, and I can't pass up anything related to food.

The November Bespoke Box is called "The Butcher".

We're reinvigorating your holidays and breathing new life into old standbys. From snacks to drinks to all-purpose essentials, use ‘em whether you're entertaining, cooking, or just lounging around.

Beauty Box 5 Review - November 2013 - Beauty Subscription Box

What is it?Beauty Box 5
How Much? $12/month, $30/quarter, $99/year
What's in it? 4-5 samples from your favourite beauty brands

The November Beauty Box 5 shipped on November 8th and arrived on November 18th! That's pretty impressive considering only a few months ago the box didn't even ship until the 18th. The theme this month is "Prep.Primp.Sparkle." and includes products so "you're ready for whatever the night may bring". Since BB5 introduced themed boxes, this is the first box that may actually fit the intended theme.

First look
Aveeno - Positively Nourishing Calming Body Wash (2oz, $0.87)
Body wash. Good for prep. I'm not a huge fan of lavender but I don't hate the smell of this wash.

Montagne Jeunesse - Glacial Clay Spa Sheet Mask (1 mask, $2.49)
I enjoy sheet masks so this will be put to use.

Blum Naturals - Oil Absorbing Facial Tissues (50 sheets, $2.99)
I received almost the exact same product in my April BB5, except that on…

Nailtini - Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in Champagne (15ml full size, $13)
This arrived damaged. I could smell it immediately when I opened my mail box. The bottle leaked in transit and I found a conglomerated mess around the top of the bottle. I e-mailed IpsyCare but have yet to hear back.

**Update - Ipsy sent me a new bottle of Naitini right away. I've been wearing the colour a lot lately. It's more of a neutral than metallic, which was unexpected.

Starlooks - Gem Eye Pencil in Amethyst (full size, $14)

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic Baked Eyeshadow in Sun (0.89oz sample, $1)

Topbox Review - November 2013 - Beauty Subscription Box

What is it?Topbox
How Much? $12 per month, shipping included
What’s in it?  4 deluxe beauty samples Topbox arrived later than expected this week, but that's due to the Remembrance day holiday. Normally the boxes arrive on the 10th, but given Monday was a holiday, the package didn't ship until yesterday, arriving early this morning.

Once again I opted for a regular Topbox.

Shu Uemura - Whitefficient Whitening Lotion (20ml, $10)
I am not comfortable with this product. The name alone is offensive. If you Google it and look at the marketing materials, it's aimed at women of Asian decent. Granted Shu Uemura is a Japanese company, in my view, the inherent root of products like these is racism. Here is one good article on the subject. And here is a funny one (it's minimally NSFW). Again, this is just my view, but I'm surprised to see a product like this included in Topbox.

Update:  For those that received the whitening lotion, Topbox says they will be replacin…

Quarterly Co. Hello Fresh Review - November 2013 - Lifestyle Subscription Box

Currently there are 45 contributors, curating boxes of everything from technology, to food, to fashion, and everything in between.
I have always been curious about the mysterious subscription service called Quarterly Co. For a long time it was hard to find reviews of the various Quarterly Co. boxes and with a high price point, I was apprehensive about subscribing to an unproven service.

I finally took a chance when I learned that HelloFresh, the fresh meal preparation subscription service, was joining Quarterly as a contributor. HelloFresh doesn't ship to Canada, but the Quarterly Co. version of Hello Fresh does. I signed up immediately! Curated by HelloFresh founder Hamish Shephard, HelloFresh for Quarterly Co. is "all about helping you …
