LOULOU Edition Luxe Box Review - Summer 2013 - Beauty Subscription Box

What is it? Luxe Box by Loose Button
How Much? $26 per quarter, $50 semi-annually, $96 yearly. Shipping included.
What’s in it?  7-8 Trial-size products every season (4x per year)

For the first time, Luxe Box introduced Limited Edition boxes to complement their regular seasonal box. The Summer season offered four limited edition boxes - LOU LOU box, Wedding box, Fragrance box and Condition Culture box. The LOULOU box was $5 to upgrade and I jumped at it immediately.

This seasons, Loose Button used new, sleeker shipping boxes.  Less packaging is always a win in my books, however, Canada Post seems to have "dropped the box" on this one...

Run over by a truck? Looks like road rash on the left!

Even the internal Luxe Box was fatally damaged. FAIL Canada Post.

I was shocked at how badly damaged the Luxe Box is. These are thick, sturdy boxes. A great deal of force would have been needed to cause this kind of damage. Thankfully, none of the products inside were damaged.

Luxe Box does not include a product card. Once the box is received, subscribers are to log into their Loose Button account and navigate to the "Personal Product Dashboard" to get all product information. This is a little snapshot of my dashboard:

More items were further down the page...

The LOULOU Edition Luxe Box was curated by the editors of LOULOU Magazine and included a 4 month subscription to the magazine!

Cake Beauty - Heavy Cream Intensive Hand Repair Balm (100ml, $22 - FULL SIZE!)
This supremely hydrating formula renews and protects hands for immediate and long lasting results. Made with 20% shea butter, this warm french vanilla scent melts into skin. Cake Beauty is proudly Canadian and all of our products are made locally within Canada. All Cake products are 100% gluten free.

I've recently become a fan of Cake Beauty. The lotions are great and I love that they are a Canadian company.

Olay - CC Cream in Light to Medium (50ml, $23 - FULL SIZE!)
Introducing beauty's next big trend! Olay CC Cream provides instant coverage plus correction to fight 7 signs of aging, including uneven tone, age spots, and wrinkles. This all-in-one triple stream formula combines a daily anti-aging moisturizer, SPF 15 sunscreen and sheer tint for younger-looking skin.

This is a bonus item that wasn't included in the product list when the Limited Edition boxes were first announced. The tube this comes in is the coolest thing ever! The product looks like it's in suspended animation. I am looking forward to trying this out. I currently use a Maybelline BB Cream but I am always open to trying something new. My only concern is the shade may be too dark. I probably would be better with  the Fair to Light shade, but since it's summer my skin-tone is a bit darker than usual right now.

Vichy - Liftactiv Serum 10 Eyes & Lashes (0.1 fl. oz, $4.50 - sample)
Liftactiv Serum 10 Eyes and Lashes is a unique formula perfect for treating eye contours concerns and lashes concerns. With just use, the eye contours are illuminated and more radiant. With continued use, wrinkles are lessened and eyelashes appear thicker, shinier, and more fortified! (Full size, 1 oz is $45).

I'm quite interested in the eyelash thickening claims on this product.

Vichy - Aqualia Thermal Night Spa (7ml, $3.55 - sample)
The first replenishing & soothing spa sleeping mask. A new ultra-sensorial texture that reproduces the soothing freshness and softness of a spa treatment. This light gel-cream envelops skin with velvety softness and is non-greasy and non-sticky. (Full size, 75ml is $38).

I received this sample from Lisa in my swap box. I wasn't sure what it was until I read the info on my product dashboard. Now I'm happy I have two samples!

Philosophy - Purity Made Simple 3-in-1 cleanser for face and eyes (1oz, $3.25 - sample)
Award-winning daily facial skin cleanser is formulated to gently cleanse, tone and melt away all face and eye makeup in one simple step, while lightly hydrating the skin. Features & benefits: Deep cleans pores and eliminates makeup build-up, natural oil extracts help condition skin, fragrance-free formula. (Full size, 8oz is $26).

I used to be a huge fan of Philosophy but I haven't used their products in quite a while. I've tried other of the Purity line before but never this cleanser.

Clinique - High Impact Mascara (0.14oz, $9.50 - sample)
Kicks up the volume and length of each and every lash for a look that's lusher, plusher, bolder. Pure, deep colour only adds to the impact. Wear it once and you'll feel naked without it. Ophthalmologist Tested. (Full size .28oz/7ml, is $19)

I have so many Clinique mascara samples from Clinique Bonus time. I didn't really like the last Clinique mascara I used, but I will give this one a shot.

Kerastase - Elixir Ultime The Imperial (3ml, $1.30 - sample)
Multi-use oil that can be used pre and post styling. Delivers purest anti-oxidants to protect color-treated hair from external aggressors. Provides ultimate shine, deep conditioning and nourishment. Offers UV protection and enhances the true depth of color with a soft floral scent. (Full size, 125ml is $54).

This is a very expensive hair product! I currently use a Macadamia Natural Oil product in my hair as well as a Moroccan Argan Oil shampoo. I can't say that either do much for my hair. My hair isn't colour treated so the Elixir Ultime probably wouldn't benefit me very much.

Roberto Cavalli - Just Cavalli - Eau de Toilette (5ml, $6.60 - sample)
This creamy, sexy floral opens with a dazzling top note of Neroli, an essential oil produced from blossoms of the bitter orange tree. The fragrance is followed by a magnetic heart note of the precious Tahitian Tiare flower and grounded by a creamy palissander wood accord that adds power and nobility. Fresh, intense and alluring, Just Cavalli is the scent of youth and seduction. (Full size, 50ml is $66).

I should have taken the bottle out of the box. It's a super cute little bottle, just a mini version of the full size one, and a really great sample size. Unfortunately, I do not like the scent. It's too floral for my preferences.

Essie - Sleek Stick UV Cured Nail Appliques (One set, $10.25 - FULL SIZE!)
Re-create chic looks fresh from the runway without picking up a brush. Pre-cured UV appliqués mimic the feel of a handcrafted nail art and last up to 10 days.

I just used an sample applique I received in FLARE Magazine. The application was a little tricky but I loved the look and they lasted about a week before I pulled them off. They probably would have lasted longer if I hadn't been picking at the edges. This kit contains 18 nail appliques, a cuticle stick, a file and a buffer. All that in this little package! I don't love the style (so haute!) but I will give them a try. I would have preferred something more neutral.

Condition Culture - Knotties Hair Ties (4 ties, $8)
Stay cool in the summer heat by keeping your hair away from your face without the creases.

Oh, how I hate these little twist hair bands. I don't know why they are all the rage right now for anyone above the age of 16. They remind me of scrunchies and no one I know would be caught dead sporting a scrunchy. I'm loving snag free elastics from Sephora right now (the clear elastics Julep uses for packaging are identical and work wonderfully and are FREE!). These Knotties will be gifted to my teenage cousin. Incidentally, Luxe Box says this is a full-size product valued at $10, but on the Condition Culture website, Knotties are sold in a 5 pack for $10.

The LOULOU Edition Luxe Box contained 10 products, 3 of them full size, plus a 4 month subscription to LOULOU Magazine! The retail value of all the products is over $90, and that doesn't include the magazine cover price! I paid $24 for my regular Luxe Box subscription ($96 yearly subscription) plus a $5 upgrade fee to get the LOULOU box. For $29, I'd say this is a great haul!

I have two more Luxe Boxes coming this season. After signing up for the LOULOU Edition, I created a second account to get the regular Summer Edition. That one will be shipped in mid-July because I opted to wait for the signature packaging. Good thing, since this signature box was destroyed in transit! The other box I am waiting on is the Wedding Edition Luxe Box, provided complimentary by the Loose Button team. That one should be arriving any day now.

Which Luxe Box edition did you chose this season? What did you think of it?

  1. I got the perfume box. The perfume samples were miniatures, which I liked. I also got the Oil of Olay BB cream. It said light to fair but if I rub it really well, it blends into my skin ( I have dark skin). I like the box overall but the wait will kill me for the next. Sorry about your box.
