Wantable Jewelry Box Review - May 2013 - Jewellery/Jewelry Subscription Box

What is it? Wantable
How Much? $36 monthly or $40 one time purchase, plus approximately $10 shipping
What's in it? Make up box includes 4-6 full-size premium makeup products. Jewelry box includes 4-5 boutique jewellery pieces. All are picked to match your profile preferences.
Back in March, Wantable announced they would start shipping to Canada and offered a chance for Canadians to receive their first box free. I registered my e-mail address and waited patiently for news. On May 8th, I received an e-mail from Wantable offering me a chance to be part of a "Canadian Test". I should note, this e-mail was sent to my personal e-mail account and is not associated to my blog in any way, meaning this offer was not made because I have a subscription review blog. The e-mail said only 10 people were given this offer (not sure I believe that since I know of at least 2 other bloggers alone).

To participate in the Canadian Test, I would have to register for a subscription and pay full price for my first month, including taxes, duty and shipping fees. Wantable would then refund me the price of the subscription ($36) and I would get the box for "free", only paying for the tax, duty and shipping. I was also not allowed to share this offer with others, or it would void my eligibility. Wantable warned there could be some issues with the process and order tracking may not work properly at the start.

I signed up for Wantable, opting for a Jewelry Box, completed the style profile and proceeded to checkout. At this point, I wasn't sold on carrying through with the "Test". I wanted to see how much it would cost me. I was surprised to see the additional fees for Canadians worked out to about $10. Not bad at all. I submitted my order and waited patiently again!

My Wantable box shipped on May 14th (with tracking information) and the $36 credit was issued back to my credit card on May 16th. So far, so good. One thing I noticed about the tracking, is that the Wantable box actually shipped from WITHIN Canada. It looks like Wantable is handling their Canadian shipping like Ipsy and Sephora. I'm guessing they bring the products to a distribution site in Canada (Mississauga, looks like) and then the shipments go out from there. Shipping took exactly 7 days, and probably would have been shorter had it not been for the May long weekend.

Now with those pesky details out of the way, let's get on to the box!

The May box is curated by Suzanne Kopulos, a shopping and style expert based in Chicago. The picks for May are on trend with "gorgeous stones, bright statement pieces, and stunning metallics".

First look.

Wantable has changed their branding. No more purple boxes. The new black and white theme with the W logo is minimalistic, sleek and modern. The box also fits in my condo size mail slot! That's always a bonus in my books.

Uptown Girls - Silver Buckle Bracelet ($23)
Uptown Girls reminds you to buckle up in style with this iridescence green double wrap bracelet featuring a silver buckle.

I really like this bracelet. I don't think it's real leather but it's still good quality. The colour is great for spring and summer. It's edge and pretty at the same time. I think it should be called "triple wrap" though because double wrapped would be way too big!

Phoenix Necklace & Earrings ($28)
The Phoenix Necklace is one of Suzanne's personal favourites, and we think you'll love it too! With a mixture of elements, it will add beautiful drama to your outfit.

I am loving statement necklaces so I was very happy to see this one in my box. It's a total mixed-media piece. There's gold, leather, rhinestones and the bright orange stones. All of it is man-made of course, but it still seems to be of good quality and weight. I love the orange colour and it will be a bright and cheery addition to my jewellery box.

Candi Bracelet ($26)
This bracelet has style to spare!

That has got to be the most lame product description I have ever seen! I like this bracelet though! It's a metal stretch bracelet with rhinestone accents in an antique finish. I see it more as a fall piece than a summer piece but I will still be able to mix it into my wardrobe.

Brigitte Ring ($15)
The Brigitte Ring features a cluster of shimmering elements to add some glam style to your outfits.

I like the ring, but it isn't something I would wear often. I see it more as a cocktail ring to wear with evening attire. It's another piece I would use more in fall and winter, especially over holiday season. I don't love the stretch aspect of the ring, but I like the rhinestone cluster.

I am extremely happy with my first Wantable box. While these aren't pieces I would have picked out for myself, I will get use and wear out of every item. The necklace and the wrap bracelet are my favourite items.

In total I received 4 pieces (5 if you count the earrings), with a retail value of $92! I only paid $10 shipping for this box so that is an amazing value, but had I paid full price, the value is still double what I would have paid!

For now my Wantable subscription has been de-activated. It's not because I am unhappy or dissatisfied with the service. Quite the opposite actually! Unfortunately a Wantable subscription doesn't currently fit into my Subscription Box budget. I re-assess my subscriptions every three months so I will re-visit my subscription situation later in the summer. I really want to try out the Wantable Makeup Box too!

Side note... You may notice I use both spellings of jewelry/jewellery throughout this post. Don't worry, I am not confused! Jewelry is the Americanized spelling and is used when referring to the actual Wantable service (Wantable Jewelry Box). Jewellery is the Canadian (British) spelling is is used when referring to actual items (a piece of jewellery). Both are in the post title to lure web searches! Sneaky of me!

  1. Nice! I like the orange necklace and green bracelet best too, but how on earth did you receive your box before me when you're in B.C. and I'm IN Ontario? Not just that, but it says I won't get it until the 23rd. I'll never understand shipping!

Aren't you clever with the two jewellery spellings! Hahaha

    1. Did yours ship on 14th too? That's strange that it's taking longer. Maybe you'll find a surprise tomorrow! I wonder if you got similar stuff as me or completely different. Can't wait to see your review!

  2. Yes, it shipped on the 14th. It's been in Mississauga since the 17th. I understand a slight delay because of the long weekend, but I'm hoping it'll get here tomorrow.

    Great review by the way!!

  3. Your box looks a lot better than most of the ones I've seen Canadians getting! All your pieces are actually in style and pretty. Other boxes have been down right dreadful. Maybe it is because yours was part of a special review box, but I think that Wantable should be sending out good stuff in every box not misrepresenting their products by sending out good boxes for review and then not following up with subscribers

Anyway great review! I'm loving your blog!

    1. I wasn't offered this box for review. It was part of the Canadian shipping test and my e-mail was chosen at random from among the people who signed up for notification back in March. I used my personal e-mail account to sign up and it is in no way associated or linked to my blog so Wantable had no way to know this box would be posted for review (nor did I tell them until today when I posted the review)!

I was pretty stringent in my style profile. I opted for classic and glam. I did not want boho, quirky, seasonal or rock n roll. I was also very specific about materials, sizes, styles and symbols. I think they did a great job at matching the pieces to my style profile.

  4. you sly girl!! :) i thought about trying the jewellery/jewelry box but went the makeup route at the last moment because i was worried i would get jewellery that wouldn't suit me. i am so picky/fickle with jewellery... even stuff i pick out for myself i sometimes never end up wearing haha. anyway, i really enjoyed your review and i thought you got a great box! :)

  5. Your box looks way better than some I have seen! The necklace is really nice and similar to some I have sitting in my etsy cart, lol.

I think the free offer was to the first 1000 girls who registered... and the next 1000 got their 2nd box free. Either way, pretty sweet. I opted for the makeup, and I'm still waiting! :)

    1. I love the necklace too. It's very "Banana Republic" at a fraction of the price! I've seen other reviews with pieces that I wouldn't enjoy, but it's all based on individual style profiles. Each box is completely different.

    2. And yes, I signed up for the first box free offer but Wantable later said they were overwhelmed by the response and were not able to provide that many boxes for free. Apparently they picked the first batch of people at random. I'm not sure how it will work for the rest.

  6. Thanks for the great review of the Wantable Jewellery Box, especially the info on taxes & duties. I've been waiting patiently for a Cdn review with those details.

I like that Wantable offers two types of boxes and that you have the option of doing a one-time purchase. My budget can't afford this box either at the moment, but I'm going to put this on my "Boxes To Try" list. :)

    1. I'm glad you found it useful! I don't recommend doing the one time purchase. You'll save $4 if you sign up for a subscription. Skipping and cancelling are super easy and can be done from your account info page. I was able to cancel my subscription with one click of the button after I received my box.

  7. I just got my wantable box and I love the statement necklace and the simple black band and the two different earrings. However, I was not wild about the big hoop earrings and I will be giving those away to a cousin. I might do it less frequently since its pricy.

  8. I got this offer too, but opted for the makeup option because I am extremely picky when it comes to jewelry and not to mention that I have a ring size of 2 so no rings would EVER fit me!

    1. The make up box looks great too. All full size products! I'll probably give it a try when some of my other cosmetic subs are up.

  9. Wow, I love the idea of having jewelry boxes! It helps that I love everything you received. I am seriously consider signing up for this, though it is a bit expensive for a monthly box... Though still great value! Hmm hmm. What to do.

    1. I'm in the same boat Natalie. $46 a month is more than I want to spend. I've kept my subscription active but I am planning on skipping every other month. They make it super easy to skip, de-activate and re-activate accounts.
