Foodie Pages Chef's Box Review - April 2013 - Canadian Gourmet Food Subscription Box

What is it? Foodie Pages Chef's Box
How Much? 1 month = $55, 3 months = $150, 6 months = $270 or monthly recurring is $55/month
What's in it? 5+ gourmet foods and delicious recipes curated by a top Canadian chef.

The April Chef's Box was curated by celebrity chef Trish Magwood and features recipes from Trish's latest cookbook along with her favourite foods from local producers... perfect for a Mother's Day brunch.

 First look!

Everything was packaged neatly and securely in a small, square shipping box. I had to dig through all the crinkle paper to get to the products! It was like Christmas morning.

The product info card and recipe cards. Two recipes were included - Trish`s Family Granola and Trish`s Cornmeal Jammy Muffins. I will probably make the muffins.

Cocolico - Salted Butter Caramel & Dark Chocolate Sauce (250ml, $11)
From Vancouver, BC
Dark Valrhona chocolate combined with buttery caramel. Valrhona cocoa powder gives this decadent dessert sauce and incredible depth of flavour. This rich Dark Chocolate & Caramel Sauce is the perfect accompaniment for pie, cake, brownies and ice cream. Try it on ripe mango, smothered on banana bread, or by the spoonful!

I'm familiar with this product because it's local. I bought a couple of jars last Christmas as gifts for a friend (I made her an ice cream sundae kit!). She reported back that it was amazing! I never got to try it myself though so I can't wait to scoop it on some ice cream!

Stasis Preserves - Nova Scotia Wild Blueberry Preserves (250ml, $6.95)
From Toronto, Ontario
We source the highest quality wild blueberries and carefully jar them to preserve their delicate flavour and natural sweetness. Great on toast, stirred into yogourt or spooned over ice cream.

I can always use jam, especially one that can double as an ice cream topping! The muffin recipe uses this jam.

The Spice Trader - Organic Chai Masala (40g, $8.25)
From Toronto, Ontario
CHAI means tea and MASALA means mix. This is a blend of cardamom, pepper, cloves and cinnamon. It tickles the taste buds with the top notes of cardamom and has the right mix of warmth and spiciness from the clove, cinnamon and black pepper. It is a wonderful drink when mixed with milk and black tea. It can also be used with plain soy milk or decaffeinated tea.

I LOVE chai, especially iced chai lattes in the summer time. I can`t wait to brew a pot! It smells amazing.

The Spice Trader - Organic Ceylon Cinnamon Sticks (5 sticks, $4.95)
From Toronto, Ontario
CEYLON CINNAMON is also called true cinnamon. Cinnamon is light beige, has a fragrant perfume, and an aromatic sweet taste. Real CEYLON CINNAMON has papery quills with many layers and shouldn't be confused with darker cassia. It is used in both sweet and savoury cooking. It is often found in Mexican, Middle Eastern, Moroccan and Indian savoury cuisines. Obviously it is know as a fabulous sweet flavouring and CEYLON CINNAMON is perfect for ccinnamon sugar.

Whole cinnamon sticks are always handy to have around for baking and mulled drinks. It`s not the season for mulled wine and ciders but I will come up with something great and put them to good use.

Heavenly Honey - Country Garden Raw Canadian Honey (375ml, $6)
From Blackburn Hamlet, Ontario
Your favourite country garden liquid honey in a plastic honey bear, made locally in Ottawa. It's mess-free, kid-friendly, convenient, and just as delicious! Great for squirting into tea or drizzling on toast or yogourt

I LOVE honey. I cannot have a cup of tea without a bit of honey as sweetener. I also use it sometimes in cooking and baking instead of sugar. The granola recipe included in the box uses this honey.

Merchants of Green - Guatemala Forrestal Medium Roast Whole Bean Coffee (454g, $16.95)
From Toronto, Ontario
Merchants of Green Coffee mantra is Fresh Coffee, Fair Trade, Green Business. This coffee has medium body and acidity and is rich with hints of bitter-sweet chocolate. It`s grown at an elevation of 1500m and is, of course, Certified Organic and Fair Trade.

This coffee smells SO good. I could smell it as soon as I opened the box. The coffee was custom roasted for the April Chef`s Box, curated by Trish Magwood. My bag was roasted on April 29th! You can`t get much more fresh than that! Unfortunately, I am not a huge coffee drinker (unless it`s in a latte with some vanilla syrup!) but I will save this and take it to the cottage with me this summer. My friends and family will love it.

In total, I received six full-size gourmet food items from Canadian, small batch, producers. I paid $55, plus $12.60 shipping/tax for this box, and received $54.10 worth of product. The shipping fee is what kills it for me. If it was free shipping, this box would be a no brainier and I would subscribe longer term. Unfortunately, I cannot afford $67 per month to keep this one up. I absolutely LOVE everything I received in this box though and I think it is well worth it. I will keep my eye on the Chef`s Box though and will probably purchase a single box from time to time.

In other exciting news from Foodie Pages, the Tasting Box is accepting new subscribers for June. The Tasting Box is a smaller version of the Chef's Box, offering a serving or two of 5 products every month. It a recurring monthly subscription for $10.95 per month, including shipping! I signed up for this one immediately. If you are interested, act fast because the Tasting Box sells out quickly.

  1. Oh yikes that is a lot of money up front but those products look AMAZING. I'm new to this subscription box things but I'm very tempted to give the tasting box a try. It looks like this month's is gluten-free too... I wish there were reviews online somewhere because it's hard for me to get an idea of how large the products actually are but it looks like a decent size from the photos.

    1. The sizes seem pretty decent. Some are samples and some seem full size. The chutney and dressing are both about 250ml which is very good.

    2. Yeah! When I realized the chutney was full size and a $8.50 value just on its own I took the plunge and signed up. It should go through your referrals :) I'll be sure to review it on my own blog too. I'm really excited for this. I hope they manage to keep them mainly gluten-free though or it won't be worth it. It looks like your box here is also GF. What I don't like is their cancellation policy, I feel like 30 days means that if I don't like a box I get, it'll be too late to cancel for the next one. I'm new to sub boxes so maybe that is normal, but I guess for $11 it's not a big deal. I definitely wouldn't have signed up for a $60 one with that policy.

    3. OH MY. So glad I signed up yesterday. Just got an email today and the box is now $15. I assume we're locked in at the price we signed up with?

    4. I saw that! I wonder if it was a typo... If not, we should be locked in. $15 is still a great price though. And it's already sold out again!
